LHS Student Cell Phone Policy

In order to support the academic performance and the social and emotional fitness of our students, we are making a schoolwide commitment to banning the use of cell phones during instructional time.  Data clearly shows that smartphones and social media erode human connection, increase depression, and enable addictions while negatively impacting grades. So that we can help our students develop into happy, healthy, productive, and resilient adults, all teachers are expected to implement an in-class practice to ensure cell phones are not used for non-academic purposes from bell to bell during class periods. By signing this contract, students and parent(s)/guardian(s) acknowledge the following rules:

***This policy will be enforced, regardless of whether the contract is signed or not***

  • Students can use their electronic devices before school, after school, during break, and during lunch. All other times are considered instruction time (per Ed. Code 48901.7).
  • Cell phones may not be used anywhere on campus during instructional time. Students with an unscheduled period may not use their cell phone on campus until dismissal.
  • Cell phones must remain in the students backpack or otherwise inaccessible.
  • Cell phones must be in “silent mode” or “airplane mode” during instructional time.
  • Cell phones must stay in the classroom when students leave for the restroom, nurse, counselor, or other location on campus.
  • Notifications must be disabled on smartwatches during class time.
  • The use of a cell phone to film conflict between other students or who distribute video and/or pictures of conflict between students before, during or after the school day will receive a two day suspension.
  • The use of personal electronic devices is strictly forbidden in private areas, restrooms, such as locker rooms, washrooms, dressing areas, classrooms, and offices at any time will be subject to discipline.
  • The use of electronic video and/or audio recording in any building on this campus, without the express consent of the principal and staff member(s), is prohibited and subject to disciplinary action per CA Ed. Code 51512 and/or misdemeanor or felony charges and a fine up to $10,000 per CA Penal Code 632.
  • Lindhurst is not financially responsible for the replacement of any electronic device which is lost or stolen.
  • If a student refuses to relinquish the cell phone/smart watch/electronic device and/or headphones to a staff member when asked, that student will meet with an administrator for In House Suspension, Saturday School, or Off School Suspension (OSS).
  • Additionally, when there is a violation, administrators or designee will notify parents via text message and/or email through our Minga.io platform.

If a student is caught violating the rules above and/or engaging in activities that are obviously inappropriate for cell phone use in designated areas, the following consequences will occur:

  • 1st Offense: Teacher refers student and cell phone/equipment to administrator or designee. Administrator/designee confiscates until the end of the day and documents the violation in Assertive Discipline. Parent/guardians will be notified. Student will be able to pick up the phone at the end of the day.

  • 2nd Offense: Teacher refers student and cell phone/equipment to administrator or designee.  Administrator/designee holds the phone until the parent is able to pick up the phone, documents the violation in Assertive Discipline, and detention will be assigned. There will be an Administrative Conference with student and parent(s)/guardian to review the cell phone contract. Student may be required to complete a reflection assignment.

  • 3rd Offense: Teacher refers student and cell phone/equipment to administrator or designee. Administrator/designee holds the phone until the parent is able to pick up the phone and documents the violation in Assertive Discipline, and detention will be assigned. Student will be required to complete a reflection assignment. The next school day, the student will be required to turn in the phone into the office at the beginning of the day for five days. Student will be able to pick up the phone at the end of each day for five days. After the fifth day, student will be responsible for holding their own phone. *Students can not have more than one phone on campus. If a student turns in a phone due to a violation and is later caught with another this will result in their 4th offense.

  • 4th Offense*: Teacher refers student and cell phone/equipment to administrator or designee.  Only the parent will be able to pick up the phone. Student will be required to complete a reflection assignment. Student is required to turn the phone into the office at the beginning of the day for the remainder of the semester. Student can pick it up at the end of the day. Failure to comply will result in additional disciplinary actions up to and including In-House Suspension, Saturday School, or suspension from school.
